Victorian French cast iron-bound strongbox by Bauche Brevete
With a key.

Antique safe made from cast iron in France, Manufactured as a safety lock box for storing either important documents or jewellery this was easily transported for the upwardly mobile lady or gentleman during the Victorian period. These were also used as diplomats lockboxes when travelling on the continent. This was a fireproof safety box with padded insides which was instrumental in protecting its precious contents both inside and out.
