Description

Pair of blue and white plates with flower vases. Delft, dated 1760. Mark: LV .

A pair of blue and white plates with a wide flange, painted in the center with an opulent bouquet of flowers in a vase on a high-waisted foot. The border is decorated with palmette-shaped panels, alternately filled with a flower and leaves on a blue ground and a demi-flower on trellis diaperwork.

The LV initials on the back of the plates are not a factory mark. Besides factory names and marks, it was a common practice for pottery owners to use their initials as a mark. However LV does not match with any of the pottery owners’ initials in 1760. Therefore it is possible that the initials belonged to the client who ordered the plates at the pottery, perhaps originally a set of six or more. The date also supports this suggestion. It could have indicated a marriage or other memorable event.

Condition: very good considering age of 260 years! The usual minor edge chips.
